We’ve launched our mobile payments service in Pakistan, which is the latest addition to our mobile payment coverage in Asia. By partnering with the largest MNOs in country (Mobilink, Telenor, Zong, Ufone, and Warid) we’re able to reach more than 136 million subscribers, providing them with a simple, secure and seamless way of paying for popular digital content such as wallpapers, ringtones, games etc. According to the Global Findex Database, only 2.9% of the adult population owns a debit card in Pakistan. Direct Carrier Billing can bridge the gap to the unbanked population, acting as a service enabler where other monetisation methods fall short.
Smartphone adoption in the country reached 31% in 2015, which means that feature phones account for a large part of the market and play a significant role in the digital society. With increasing mobile app-based services adoption, the future of high-end digital content in Pakistan is looking very bright, giving mobile payments vast potential in the coming app-oriented mobile economy.
Experts predict that by 2020 smartphone penetration in Pakistan will reach 51 % based on 3G/4G expansion alone. At the moment, monthly smartphone sales are averaging 1.5 to 2 million, with 70% of all sales favoring Android-based devices. This is also opening the door for widespread usage of Android in-app payments, turning Pakistan into the go-to destination for Android app developers looking for the next big market for their apps.
